Scanning for Kids of All Ages
by Donna A. Ford

Digital Camera Owner's page

It looks like a camera but your digital camera really is a scanner. It takes one sample each time you click the shutter. Light enters the camera through the lens and strikes an array of CCDs. An Array is like a Tic-Tac-Toe grid filled with CCDs instead of Xs and Os.

Hints for Taking Pictures

  • To prevent jagged lines, before taking the picture check that any lines in the shot are horizontal or vertical rather than at an angle.

  • Save images in JPG/JPEG compressed format for web distribution; save in JPG/JPEG uncompressed or TIF/TIFF format for print only, due to larger file sizes created.

Hints for Image Editing

Digital camera images can be improved using features found in image editing software.

  • Remove color casts due to weather or other lighting problems.
  • Adjust contrast for drama

Hints for Printing at Drugstore

  • Make changes such as Brightness and Contrast before taking to be printed.
  • Use the histogram in the image editing program as explained in the book for best results.
