Problem Images

Tintypes; Salted Paper or Albumen Prints; Kodak Prints circa 1955

tintype

Tintypes
Image on iron plate; popular from Civil war up to 1900.

  • Images of scanned tintypes need tone curves or brightness/contrast adjustment.

  • Tintypes are subject to bending, scratching, and rusting in the scratched areas. These defects can be corrected with image editing software tools.

Salted Paper and Albumen Prints
Back

Salted paper prints were introduced in 1840; Albumen prints in 1850. Both remained popular into the late 1890s. Both type of prints are subject to fading. Notice that jewelry was hand painted and has not faded.

  • Histogram shows faded image data.

  • Brightness/contrast adjustment needed after scanning.
  • A single color can be added easily to enhance the image.
